We set the Kestrel up a little way from the house out in the pasture late last winter. Sometime in the late spring, my husband noticed that two volunteer spaghetti squash plants had come up within a foot of the Kestrel and were thriving. The pasture soil is very poor farmed out cotton land and we have been in a severe drought this year in Texas which made our discovery quite amazing. We did not fertilize the squash plants and only watered them occasionally and we still harvested eleven nice squash from the two plants. The nearby old apple trees seem to be taking on new life as well. I'm thinking about moving the Kestrel to the middle of my garden this spring.
